SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Hundreds of people paid their respects at a weekend funeral for Box Elder County Sheriff J. Lynn Yeates, who died of natural causes a day after he was sworn into office to serve his third term.

Daughter Amber Yeates Kuchinski said Saturday her father suffered after the death of his wife in November from cancer, but he was determined to fulfill a promise to his dying spouse he would run again.

The 68-year-old sheriff was remembered as a generous man who developed an unconventional sense of humor during a law enforcement career spanned decades and included stints on ambulance crews and in the crime lab.

The Standard-Examiner reports (http://bit.ly/1A8EYhA ) more than 70 police vehicles from all over the state provided his final escort to his native Cache County.
