LAS VEGAS (AP) — Police say they've arrested a man in what investigators think was a random sex attack and slaying of a woman collecting cans for recycling behind a bar east of downtown Las Vegas.

Officer Larry Hadfield said Wednesday that police don't think 24-year-old Jerry Howard of Las Vegas had any prior connection with the victim, Kathy Shines.

Howard was arrested early Wednesday at an apartment complex off Nellis Boulevard, not far from where 54-year-old Shines was found with fatal stab wounds about 6 a.m. Saturday.

Howard is being held at the Clark County jail pending an initial court appearance on murder, sex assault, kidnapping and robbery charges.

It's not immediately clear if he has a lawyer.

Police had released security video images of the man they were seeking in the slaying.
