BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — The Vermont Health Department says students from the Waterford Elementary School won the top four spots in the department's contest seeking posters warning of the dangers of radon.
The department says 51 elementary and middle school students submitted artwork to the Health Department last year as part of the contest.
Waterford teacher Laurie Roberts says she was impressed with her students' understanding of the dangers of radon.
The posters were judged based on the quality of the artwork, the poster's educational value, and its originality. Artwork created for the Radon Poster Contest is used to promote radon awareness and encourage people to test their homes for radon.
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is colorless and odorless. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.
