HONOLULU (AP) — North Korea has been hit with new sanctions because of what the U.S. says was its link to a cyberattack on Sony Pictures. In an order signed today by President Barack Obama, the sanctions will target the regime's defense industry and spy service. The president says the aim is to impact the government, not North Koreans.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The family of a Utah man killed by police while wielding a samurai sword is suing the officers and the city of Sarasota Springs. The federal civil rights lawsuit filed today seeks more than $2 million in damages. It says Darrien Hunt wasn't a threat, and two officers fatally shot him after he tripped while running away. It also alleges that Hunt was treated differently because of his race. Hunt was black. The officers are white.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia authorities say two men arrested yesterday after a shootout with two officers who were wounded had killed a North Carolina couple and set their home on fire. The gunbattle happened near Lewisburg. One of the suspects was wounded in the leg. The suspects are a son and father from Texas. Officials say the bodies of the couple were under a mattress in a pickup driven by the wounded suspect.

STANTON, Calif. (AP) — There have been extremely long lines today at California Department of Motor Vehicles offices. A new program is in effect that gives driver's licenses to the nation's largest population of immigrants in the country illegally. The program is aimed at boosting road safety and making immigrants' lives easier.

ASHLAND, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire officials say snowy conditions and excessive speed are to blame for two pileups today on Interstate 93 that involved at least 35 vehicles near Ashland. The smash-ups were so extensive it took fleets of tow trucks nearly three hours to unsnarl mangled vehicles and get the road open again. Amazingly, there were only minor injuries.
