PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — The Rose Parade is underway on a bright but chilly morning in Pasadena, California. An unusually cold air mass over Southern California has some people fretting about the condition of the delicate flowers decorating the floats. But the chill hasn't kept people from lining up early to claim spots along the parade route. With temperatures near freezing, spectators were advised to dress in layers and drink warm liquids.
SURABAYA, Indonesia (AP) — Wind and rain continue to hamper the search for victims and wreckage from AirAsia Flight 8501. Nine bodies have been recovered since the plane carrying 162 people crashed into the Java Sea on Sunday while flying from Indonesia to Singapore. The first victim to be identified and returned to her family was buried today. Singapore's navy has sent an unmanned underwater vehicle to try to locate the wreckage, and more than 50 ships are scouring the area with high-tech detection equipment.

State TV footage shows Bashar Assad having baked beans and boiled potatoes with soldiers and pro-government militiamen in a Damascus neighborhood that has seen intense fighting in recent months. A Britain-based activist group says today that more than 76,000 people were killed in Syria in 2014, including nearly 18,000 civilians.
