ISTANBUL (AP) — Turkish news agencies say police subdued a man after he threw grenades and fired a weapon at officers near the offices of the prime minister.
Istanbul Police Chief Selami Altinok told the state-run Anadolu Agency that officers destroyed two unexploded grenades. The man was also armed with a small weapon and an assault rifle. He was arrested after the incident near the offices at the Dolmabahce Palace in downtown Istanbul.
The nearby offices are used by Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and previously by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The agencies said neither was present during the attack.
Altinok said the man is suspected to be a member of a terrorist organization. "The individual's identity and affiliation is obvious to us. . He has spent time in prison," he said.
