They had been told to bundle up because of near-freezing temperatures after yesterday's blustery winter storm that dumped snow and ice across the West. Temperatures hovered in the mid-30s for New Year's Eve celebrations in Las Vegas, but the synchronized bursts of color that shot from the rooftops along the Las Vegas Strip warmed the sky.
UNDATED (AP) — Revelers crowded New York's Times Square and converged on the beaches of Brazil and skyscrapers of Dubai to say good riddance to a turbulent 2014 marred by terror woes, Ebola outbreaks and a horrific series of airline disasters. But tragedy struck in Shanghai on New Year's Eve. Authorities say 36 people were killed and 47 others were treated at hospitals after a stampede on Shanghai's historic waterfront. One man told China's Xinhua (shihn-wah) News Agency that people had scrambled for coupons that looked like dollar bills.
SURABAYA, Indonesia (AP) — The bodies of two more people killed in the AirAsia plane crash have been recovered today -- bringing the total to nine. Meanwhile, crews are struggling against wind and heavy rain to find the 153 people still missing. More than 50 ships are scouring the Java Sea, and Singapore's navy has sent an unmanned underwater vehicle to try to pinpoint the wreckage and the all-important flight data and cockpit voice recorders.
SURABAYA, Indonesia (AP) — The one AirAsia passenger to be identified has been buried in a village in Indonesia. Hayati Lutfiah Hamid's identity was confirmed by fingerprints and other means. Her family received her body today during a brief ceremony at a police hospital in Surbaya, the Indonesian city where the plane took off. An imam said a simple prayer as about 150 people gathered in the drizzling rain, and red flowers were sprinkled over the mound of wet dirt topped by a small white tombstone.
BERLIN (AP) — More than 7,900 people have now died from Ebola in West Africa. The World Health Organization puts the exact number at 7,905, and says more than 20,200 cases of the Ebola virus have been reported since the outbreak in December 2013. Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone have been the hardest-hit countries.
