PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The number of Rhode Island students who passed the GED in 2014 made a huge slide from the previous year.
WPRI-TV (http://bit.ly/1BlqH2R) reported that as of Dec. 3, 225 students passed the high school equivalency test in Rhode Island compared with 2,363 in 2013.
Just 625 people have taken the test in Rhode Island in 2014.
Elliot Krieger, a spokesman for Education Commissioner Deborah Gist, blamed the drop on a new test this year, which means people could not carry over work from previous years. He said something similar happened when the test changed in 2002.
The newspaper reports that the GED is also more difficult this year with more writing and problem-solving questions.
C.T. Turner, a spokesman for the national GED program, says the numbers are down across the country.
