NEW YORK (AP) — New York City police officer Rafael Ramos, who was killed along with his partner in an ambush a week ago, is being honored today. His wife and two sons were joined at his wake by hundreds of uniformed officers, including dozens who saluted as his flag-draped casket was carried into a Queens church. Ramos' funeral is tomorrow. Vice President Joe Biden will attend.
FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — It's not known who was driving a car that apparently hit a makeshift memorial to Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, But it was quickly restored by his supporters. The memorial went up Aug. 9, soon after the black 18-year-old was fatally shot by a white police officer. The shooting spurred massive protests, as did a grand jury decision not to indict the officer.
CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) — The jury selection process in the Colorado theater shooting case formally starts Jan. 20 and is expected take up to five months, with opening arguments in late May or early June. But 12 potential jurors have already been excused because they are prosecution witnesses, and another was dismissed because she works for the district attorney's office.
AKRON, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio couple who married on Christmas Day say they made other wedding plans over the years that fell through but this year Sarah Lewis and William Cramer decided to share their vows in the Akron hospital room where their 4-year-old son, Billy, is being treated for cancer. Doctors say Billy appears to be beating his neuroblastoma cancer.
NEW YORK (AP) — Two of the biggest package carriers are pleased at their performance this year. FedEx and UPS failed to deliver some presents in time for Christmas last year but improved their performance this holiday season. Shipment tracker ShipMatrix says FedEx delivered more than 99 percent of express packages as promised on Dec. 22 and Dec. 23. and UPS delivered 99 percent.
