LOS ANGELES (AP) — The storm system that clobbered the San Francisco Bay Area and the Pacific Northwest yesterday is now triggering mudslides and evacuations in Southern California. The National Weather Service says mud and debris has blocked part of the Pacific Coast Highway in Ventura County after heavy rain fell there and in western Los Angeles County, where possible flash flooding is a concern. Precautionary evacuations began last night in the Los Angeles suburb of Glendora, where the foothills were stripped bare by a major wildfire this year.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate takes up a $1.1 trillion spending bill today that will keep the government running but has lawmakers on both sides of the aisle complaining. Democrats object to a number of provisions including one that weakens rules on trading derivatives, the risky financial products that contributed to the 2008 financial crisis. Conservative Republicans are looking to use the measure to block President Barack Obama's action on immigration. Yesterday, Congressman Sam Farr, a California Democrat, told colleagues before the House vote: "Hold your nose and make this a better world."
DETROIT (AP) — Chrysler is adding about 179,000 vehicles to a recall for air bags that could explode with too much force. At first Chrysler agreed to replace the passenger air bag inflators made by Takata Corp. in Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. But under pressure from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, it's now adding Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas as well as additional U.S. territories.
JERUSALEM (AP) — There's been another reported attack in the West Bank. The Israeli army says a Palestinian threw acid at a Jewish family there today. A passer-by then shot and wounded the attacker. Police arrested the man and took him to a hospital under custody. Police say the woman and four girls who were attacked were slightly injured. Over the past month, 11 people have been killed in Palestinian attacks, mostly in Jerusalem.
MOSCOW (AP) — Theater owners have been trying to coax more people to the movies by upgrading seats, offering better food options and even beer and wine. But in Moscow, IKEA has taken it to a new level. The Swedish furniture giant has replaced the seats in a suburban theater there with beds. IKEA says it's part of its "Awake Love" campaign. However, it'll only last through the weekend and the beds are fully booked.
