SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Three northern Indiana colleges in close proximity are working on a way to quickly alert one another when a student is a crime victim in light of recent concerns.
Holy Cross College Dean of Students Kelly Jordan said he and officials at the University of Notre Dame and St. Mary's College are discussing how to set up an information-sharing system about criminal activity on the trio of South Bend-area campuses.
"It's doable, even if we just get the basic information," he told South Bend's Community-Campus Advisory Coalition this week.
Jordan said that when necessary, Holy Cross officials will notify their students via text message if there is an attempted robbery, break-in or other incident involving students from any of the schools. He said that even if students live on campus, they may visit an off-campus neighborhood where an incident has occurred and need to be aware of that situation.
Although the three Catholic schools are on adjacent properties, Jordan said Indiana University South Bend and other local campuses are welcome to join the effort, the South Bend Tribune reported (http://bit.ly/1umZWqA ).
The discussions follow recent heightened concern about crime in the South Bend area. Two Holy Cross students were shot and wounded in an apparent robbery attempt in October and several Holy Cross students reported last month that someone fired gunshots at their rental house.
Christina Bartos, property manager of University Edge student apartment complex in nearby Roseland, said the complex has signed a contract agreement with Roseland Police to provide regular security patrols on the property.
University Edge recently broke ground on two new buildings, and soon will provide housing for about 520 students.
