SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A federal judge has given a southern Utah man the maximum sentence of a year in prison for writing a letter threatening to kill white members of an interracial family if they didn't make a black teenage relative move away. Prosecutors say 71-year-old Robert Keller of Hurricane was upset because the then-13-year-old boy was walking down the street with a white girl. Keller apologized for sending the expletive-laden letters but said his message was misconstrued.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker says he will seek a third term. Becker said yesterday that he wants to serve another four years to oversee a new airport project and comprehensive plan for the use of nearby mountains. The Tribune reports that city councilman Luke Garrott officially launched plans to challenge Becker yesterday.
WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. (AP) — Navajo President Ben Shelly has signed off on a bill to stiffen penalties for misdemeanor crimes on the reservation. New jails and the confirmation of a handful of judges gave the tribe an opening to reconsider penalties. Lawmakers had eliminated or reduced penalties for nearly 30 offenses more than a decade ago because of a lack of detention facilities.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Ty Lawson had 15 points and made a jump shot with 29.6 seconds left that boosted the Denver Nuggets over the Utah Jazz 103-101 in a charged atmosphere last night. The game heated up after Arron Afflalo was ejected and the Jazz stormed back from a 22-point deficit to tie the game late, but Utah fell short to record their six straight loss. Gordon Hayward scored 25 and Alec Burks added 22.
