SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A man facing a murder charge in the shooting death of a local Utah singer appeared in court for the first time Monday.
Quincy Earl Lawson, 20, is accused of firing six shots outside a venue called At The Core, killing Bradley Hancock. Lawson appeared in court in a dark blue jumpsuit with his hands shackled in front, his long, tangled hair tied back behind his head.
Hancock, 24, escorted Lawson out of the club after a fight got out of hand on Nov. 15, according to charging documents. When he came back outside with a friend and saw Lawson hadn't left, Hancock threw a rock. It missed, but Lawson allegedly raised a gun and fired.
Hancock was hit twice in the arm and once in the head, according to charging documents. His friend was shot in the foot. Lawson ran away, but was found and arrested in Nephi.
Lawson is being held on $1 million bail. He is facing one count of murder, five counts of discharging a firearm charges and one count of obstructing justice.
A new court hearing was scheduled for Dec. 15.
A defense attorney, Brock Van De Camp, declined to comment on the case.
Hancock was lead singer of local band Close Grip, one of the opening acts at the club the night he was killed, the Deseret News reported. He was also a new father to a nearly 1-year-old boy and planned to get married next year, his fiance told the newspaper.
The fight inside the club started after Lawson got into a dispute with Hancock's younger brother, the paper reported.
Prosecutor T. Langdon Fisher declined to comment on specifics of the case Monday.
"It's definitely a tragedy. It's a very sad situation," he said.
