RENO, Nev. (AP) — The city of Reno is considering plans to either remove or reduce the size of a small island where waterfowl nest in a popular Reno lake to reduce pollution caused by bird excrement.
The city will hold a public meeting on the Virginia Lake Water Quality Improvement Project beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Peppermill Resort and Casino.
The city also is considering options to leave Virginia Lake alone or to leave the island alone while moving forward with water circulation improvement measures to the lake.
In September, the city urged the public to avoid contact with the lake, saying its water was contaminated as a result of an algae bloom and posed a health risk to people as well as fish, birds and other animals.
