MOSCOW, Idaho (AP) — A billboard campaign in Washington state aims to reignite a debate that splits the Pacific Northwest: Do wolves belong? The Moscow-Pullman Daily News reports the four billboards near the Idaho border by Washington Residents Against Wolves calls for the state to decrease the wolf population. Group spokeswoman Jamie Henneman says wolves kill livestock, endanger elk populations and pose a threat to the public. Ecologists dispute that claim, saying wolves are scared of humans and are crucial to the habitat.
LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) — Police have identified the driver of a white SUV who they say hit and critically wounded a Lewiston woman on Thanksgiving, then drove away. The police have declined to release the driver's name before charges are filed. The Lewiston Tribune reports 39-year-old Mikerra Lane was struck in a crosswalk. Surveillance footage shows the driver getting out of the SUV and looking at the victim before returning to the vehicle and driving off.
BONNERS FERRY, Idaho (AP) — A rock slide that closed a main BNSF Railway connection between Washington state and Idaho has been cleared. BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas says dozers and loaders were able to clear the line and they reopened at about 12:30 a.m. yesterday. The slide 14 miles east of Bonners Ferry covered the tracks at about 12:30 p.m. Friday. Melonas says the slide was 20 feet deep, 50 feet wide and 200 feet long.
NAMPA, Idaho (AP) — A pair charged with shoplifting in Nampa on Thanksgiving made police officers' jobs a lot easier this week. After reports of ongoing shoplifting, Nampa officers responded to a busy parking lot full of holiday shoppers. When they tried to arrest Gregory Redner and Camilla Hunt, both of Oregon, the pair fled. Police say Hunt ran to a car and drove away. But Hunt didn't make an escape. Instead, she drove in circles. Police laid a spike strip down and Hunt drove over it, deflating two of her tires.
