(AP) — There's an uneasy calm this morning after deep racial tension in Ferguson, Missouri erupted after a grand jury decided not to indict a white police officer who shot an unarmed black 18-year-old in August. The chaos last night included more than a dozen buildings damaged or destroyed by fire as gunshots kept firefighters temporarily at bay. Police lobbed tear gas from armored vehicles.
BAUCHI, Nigeria (AP) — Witnesses and a security official say the suicide bombers who killed at least 30 people in a northeastern Nigerian city were teenage girls. The bombers, dressed in full hijab, entered a busy market in Maiduguri and detonated their explosives. The second bomber detonated her explosives after a crowd had gathered following the first blast.
PARIS (AP) — Russia won't be getting a French-built warship any time soon. France today suspended the planned delivery after months of growing speculation about what would be the biggest arms sale ever by a NATO country to the Kremlin. Under growing pressure from allies over the Ukraine crisis, the French president's office announced the suspension "until further notice."
STRASBOURG, France (AP) — Pope Francis is telling European lawmakers that there's no room when it comes to refugees for self-interested policies that risk lives and fuel social conflict. In a speech today to the European Parliament, Francis demanded that Europe craft a unified and fair immigration policy, saying the thousands of refugees coming ashore need acceptance and assistance.
VENICE, Fla. (AP) — Authorities in Florida say they've broken up a high school prostitution ring organized by a 17-year-old Sarasota High School student. The teen faces felony charges of human trafficking of a person under 18. Venice police say a 21-year-old man is accused of paying $40 and a bottle of liquor to have sex with a 15-year-old girl. Officials say the ring was uncovered when four students confided to administrators.
