WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has stepped down. President Barack Obama says Hagel decided it was an "appropriate time for him to complete his service." But Hagel, a former Republican senator, is said by officials to have been under pressure to leave. Critics questioned his ability to publicly communicate administration policy.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Veterans Affairs Department says it has dismissed the director of the Phoenix veterans' hospital. The ouster is part of a national scandal over delays in patient care and appointment records falsified to cover up the delays. Sharon Helman, director of the Phoenix VA Health Care System, was fired today. Two high-ranking officials were placed on leave.
DETROIT (AP) — Honda is admitting that it failed to tell federal safety regulators about more than 1,700 injury and death claims involving its vehicles. That's a violation of federal law. The automaker blames data entry problems, computer errors and misinterpretation of the law. The claims are related to incidents involving air bags made by a Japanese firm, Takata.
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Government health officials are boosting their warning against use of a once-popular device for gynecologic surgery that can spread unsuspected cancer. The Food and Drug Administration says doctors should not use the devices, called laparoscopic power morcellators, for performing a hysterectomy or removing uterine fibroids "in the vast majority of women."
