BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Birmingham public library officials say cold weather and malfunctioning heating systems have led to branch closures.

Birmingham Library Regional Coordinator Felita Hawkins told WBMA-TV (http://bit.ly/1wIXlb2 ) Saturday that officials weren't expecting the cold weather, which led to near freezing overnight temperatures.

Boilers at the Southside, Central and North Birmingham branches were unable to turn on, which led to frigid temperatures inside the three buildings.

Library officials say repairs were made at the Southside and North Birmingham branches Saturday afternoon and officials are continuing repairs at the Central branch. They expect to know whether the branch can be reopened by Sunday evening.
