DENVER (AP) — Colorado is asking federal officials to again delay a decision on whether to protect the Gunnison sage grouse, saying voluntary measures could help save the bird. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plans to announce its decision tomorrow. Protecting the bird would impose restrictions on land use in the bird's habitat in Colorado and Utah. About 5,000 Gunnison sage grouse remain in southwestern Colorado and southeastern Utah.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The University of Utah will hold a full dress military ceremony and rifle salute at 11 a.m. in honor of Veterans Day. A panel discussion about drones as intelligence gathering devices is being held before it at the student union building. The Utah National Guard will stage a Veterans Day concert at 7 p.m. at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Violent crime is steadily rising in Utah. New FBI crime statistics show nearly 6,500 violent crimes were committed in Utah last year, though 2013's 49 homicides is one less than the previous two years. The rate per 100,000 residents was up about 9 percent from 2012 and up 14 percent from 2011.
WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. (AP) — Navajo voters go to the polls on Dec. 23 to choose their next president. The presidential contest was separated from the Nov. 4 general election after Chris Deschene (des-CHEE'-nee) was disqualified for failing to show he could speak fluent Navajo. Tribal lawmaker Russell Begaye took his spot on the ballot, but his candidacy is being challenged. He is facing former President Joe Shirley Jr.
