NEW YORK (AP) — The Utah parents whose 5-year-old daughter was taken from their home say "divine providence" played a hand in keeping them calm and getting her back when her father confronted the suspect. Stephanie and Aaron Edson awoke to hear someone in their suburban Salt Lake City home who then left with their daughter Lainey. Aaron Edson says he fears what would have happened if he had yelled and screamed at the man.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah chapter of the NAACP is asking the U.S. Department of Justice to review the fatal police shooting of a young man who was wielding a samurai sword. The president of the NAACP's Salt Lake City branch said the organization is concerned that the civil rights of 22-year-old Darrien Hunt were violated. Hunt was black. The officers who shot him were white.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Salt Lake City authorities are canceling a New Year's Eve fireworks show over concerns about air quality. Instead, the city council and the nonprofit Downtown Alliance want to create a giant disco ball and unveil it at midnight. They're asking for donations to help fund the $50,000 project.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — Federal officials opened the floodgates at Glen Canyon Dam, sending water rushing through the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. The five-day flood is meant to mimic conditions of the river before the dam was built, because the dam now blocks a majority of the sediment from traveling downstream. Officials believe the increased sediment will improve beaches for campers along the river.
