EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) — Officials in central Illinois have recognized five college students who helped save a family of four from their burning house.
The (Bloomington) Pantagraph reports (http://bit.ly/1xBZLu9 ) Monday that the Edwardsville Fired Department awarded plaques to the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville students. They spotted a home on fire around 1 a.m. on Sept. 6 and stopped their car to help.
Brittany Evans of Bloomington says she and two of the students called 911 while the others pounded on the front door of the house. A young girl answered the door and told them she wasn't supposed to open it for strangers.
The students were able to help the girl and her parents, brother and pets outside without reported injuries. They stayed with the family for about three hours while firefighters fought the blaze.
