SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Mormon bishop in Los Angeles is under fire for his assertion that Sen. Harry Reid is unworthy to enter the faith's temples because of his support of Democratic Party positions. Mark Paredes, in a Wednesday blog post, expressed his belief that Democrats' support of same-sex marriage, abortion rights and gambling runs contrary to church stances.

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — A 21-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in an accident that killed a flagger in a construction zone in Henderson. Police say 49-year-old Marilyn Rouse of Las Vegas was directing traffic at 2 a.m. Friday when she was struck by a car driven by Selina Gonzalez-Gascon. Gonzalez-Gascon is accused of continuing to drive after striking Rouse until she was stopped by members of the construction crew.

ELKO, Nev. (AP) — The U.S. Bureau of Land Management has started issuing tags to cut Christmas trees on BLM lands in northeast Nevada. The permits cost $5 and are limited to five tags per person. They are available at the BLM district office in Elko during regular office hours Monday through Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. They also are available by mail through Dec. 13.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The 25 newly elected Republicans in the state Assembly have selected Assemblyman Ira Hansen of Sparks to lead the lower house as speaker. Hansen was first elected in 2010 and has served in the 2011 and 2013 sessions. The Republicans also selected Assemblyman Paul Anderson of Las Vegas as Assembly majority leader.
