SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Sandy man foiled an attempt to kidnap his young daughter from her bed yesterday after confronting a man carrying her across the lawn. The 5-year-old girl wasn't hurt. Police Sgt. Dean Carriger says the man entered through an unlocked door about 4:30 a.m. The girl's stepfather confronted him and wrestled away his daughter. The man was captured.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Police say a boy was so distraught after accidently killing his friend while playing with a stolen gun that he turned the weapon on himself. South Jordan police say 15-year-old Dayton Gessell and 12-year-old Taylor Wheeler were with a group of friends playing with the three guns in the basement when Wheeler was killed last year. Police believe Gessell shot himself after the others ran for help.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah attorney general won't appeal a judge's decision to toss a manslaughter charge filed against a former police officer in the fatal shooting of an unarmed woman. Salt Lake County prosecutor Sim Gill asked for an appeal in the ruling that cleared former West Valley City police detective Shaun Cowley. Prosecutors say Cowley shouldn't have fired at 21-year-old Danielle Willard as she backed up her car.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — State education officials say an additional 9,600 students are enrolled in Utah public schools this year. Data released yesterday from the Utah State Office of Education show about 622,000 students are enrolled. The number of students in charter schools also grew by 11 percent to about 61,000 students.
