WASHINGTON (AP) — New numbers from the government show that healthy U.S. job growth has reached a level of consistency unseen in nearly two decades. The jobless rate inched down a notch to 5.8 percent, the lowest since 2008. The job gain for October was a solid 214,000, on top of a combined 31,000 more in August and September than the government had previously estimated.

GOP leaders warned the president not to take unilateral action on immigration reform. But the president said his patience has grown thin and that he will act by the year's end if there is no reform legislation.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has authorized a broad expansion of the U.S. military mission in Iraq. The Pentagon can now send up to 1,500 troops to Iraq, in additional to the 1,600 previously allowed. The troops will not be in combat roles but will do the training in protected locations around the country. The president is asking Congress for more than $5 billion to fund the fight.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The scandal of an FBI agent accused of tampering with narcotics, firearms and other evidence seized in cases is growing. A federal judge in Washington, D.C., has dismissed criminal indictments against 13 more defendants in major drug cases. Ten cases were tossed yesterday. Some of the defendants were already serving lengthy prison sentences.
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Nine rookie police officers have been fired for their behavior at a drunken graduation party in northern New Jersey. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says the incident has prompted a review of the process for selecting and training candidates. Several other officers and supervisors face disciplinary proceedings or suspensions stemming from the party at a Hoboken bar on Aug. 23.
