PROVO, Utah (AP) — A Provo woman who police say was raped, bludgeoned and left for dead after an inmate walked away from a work-release program says the jail was irresponsible. Attorneys for the victim want the Utah Supreme Court to allow her to sue the county jail for releasing Shawn Michael Leonard to work. They say there have been previous work-release escapes, and the county should have done a better job screening participants.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Salt Lake City Police are asking for help finding a man who fired into a crowd of people outside a downtown homeless shelter Tuesday evening, injuring a 44-year-old man. Police say the man was shot twice in the shoulder and is expected to survive.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Voters did some housekeeping on the Utah Constitution, putting elections for lieutenant governor in sync with elections for the governor. Voters rejected amendments to change the makeup of the Utah Tax Commission and allow some state agencies to hire their own attorneys.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A judge is striking down federal regulations that prohibit Cedar City residents from controlling prairie dogs on private property. The residents say prairie dogs are overrunning parts of their southern Utah town. The judge says the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service can't regulate the Utah prairie dog population on private land because the species is only found inside the state.
