SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Voters gave Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill a second term on Tuesday.
State election results show Gill defeated Republican Steve Nelson by about five percentage points.
Gill is a Democrat who was elected in 2010 to serve as the chief prosecutor in Utah's most populous county.
Nelson is a prosecutor within the district attorney's office and oversees violent felony cases.
Gill's tenure has been marked by several high-profile cases, including the ongoing bribery case against former Utah attorneys general John Swallow and Mark Shurtleff. Swallow and Shurtleff have denied any wrongdoing.
Gill also brought a manslaughter charge against a former police detective who fatally shot an unarmed young woman. A judge dismissed the case, ruling there wasn't enough evidence. Gill is seeking to appeal the case.
