MOJAVE, Calif. (AP) — Federal investigators probing the crash of a Virgin Galactic prototype spacecraft that killed one of two test pilots say a 5-mile path of debris across the California desert indicates the aircraft broke up in flight. National Transportation Safety Board Acting Chairman Christopher Hart says "When the wreckage is dispersed like that, it indicates the likelihood of inflight breakup."
MOJAVE, Calif. (AP) — Richard Branson who's behind Virgin Galactic's plan to take passengers on a suborbital space flight says he remains committed to civilian space travel but, as he puts it, "we are not going to push on blindly." He spoke Saturday after a prototype craft crashed a day earlier during a test flight over California's Mojave Desert, killing one pilot and injuring another.
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A key question still unanswered after an intense blaze tore through a small apartment house near the University of Southern Maine is whether the five people killed were students. One other person was critically injured. The fire Saturday morning in Portland followed a Halloween party the night before. An investigation is underway.
NEW YORK (AP) — There's more encouraging news on the Ebola treatment front. A New York doctor who became infected with the virus while taking care of patients in Guinea is improving. His condition was upgraded Saturday morning from serious but stable to stable. Dr. Craig Spencer is undergoing treatment at Manhattan's Bellevue Hospital Center.
DETROIT (AP) — President Barack Obama is pushing an economic argument ahead of midterm elections. He was in Detroit on Saturday campaigning for Michigan Democrats. He told a rally at Wayne State University that America's wealthy and its corporations "don't need another champion" and urged voters to back Democrats who are seeking to help the middle class.
