(AP) — The company that employs the test pilot who was injured but survived the explosion and crash of Virgin Galactic's prototype space tourism rocket is described as alert and talking with his family and doctors. Scale Composites, which is developing SpaceShipTwo, says Peter Siebold was serving as pilot during Friday's ill-fated test flight high over the Mojave Desert.
TEHACHAPI, Calif. (AP) — The pilot who was killed in a test flight of Virgin Galactic's experimental space plane on Friday is being remembered as a respected test pilot and devoted husband and father of two young children. Michael Alsbury was the co-pilot on SpaceShipTwo. His next-door neighbor says the last time she saw him he was playing with his son and daughter in the yard.
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Authorities say everyone is accounted for after a fire swept through an apartment house near the University of Southern Maine's commuter campus, killing five people and critically injuring one. It's unclear if any of the victims were students. The fire early today in Portland followed a Halloween party on Friday night. The building housed two apartments.
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Officials in Mexico's Guerrero state say four men and a woman died after a shooting inside a bar in an Acapulco neighborhood away from the tourist zones. Guerrero is known for violence from social unrest and gang rivalries, and it's currently tense over the disappearance of 43 college students that prosecutors have blamed on a mayor and police in an inland area.
CHICAGO (AP) — For the first time since late 2010, the average price for a gallon of gas is below $3. That's according to oil analyst Patrick DeHaan of GasBuddy.com. He says U.S. gas prices have fallen 34 cents in the last month to an average of $2.99 a gallon, a level last seen on Dec. 22, 2010. DeHaan says 47 states now have pump prices below the $3 mark.
