SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Sentencing is today for a Prpvo man who was the target of a FBI task force for allegedly plotting to bomb government offices. The 35-year-old Keith Max Pierce agreed to a plea deal in September that calls for him to serve two years in a federal prison and get mental health treatment. He pleaded guilty to a weapons charge.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Search warrants show Saratoga Springs police officers chased and shot a black man armed with a samurai-style sword as part of a Japanese anime costume because they thought he would hurt someone with the weapon after he swung it at them. The documents say Darrien Hunt's brother later told investigators the 2 ½-foot-long steel sword was dull, but could cause injury if swung. The warrant says Hunt was a hallucinogenic drug user, and in a Facebook posting said he had a sword and was going to get shot.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah officials are set to unveil a new array of solar panels that will help power the Olympic Oval in Kearns that is used for major speed skating competitions. More than 3,100 solar modules have been affixed to parking canopy structures at the facility in a $1.4 million project. Utah Olympic Legacy officials say the solar panels will lead to cost savings of about $100,000 per year.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Dwight Howard had 22 points and 10 rebounds and the Houston Rockets beat the Utah Jazz 104-93 last night to spoil Quin Snyder's NBA coaching debut. Houston held Utah to 33 percent shooting in the final quarter. Alec Burks led Utah with 18 points. Derrick Favors added 16, and Trey Burke had 15.
