LOS ANGELES (AP) — One of the nation's largest charter school groups says it hopes to more than double its enrollment in the Los Angeles area over the next six years.
The Los Angeles Times reported Sunday (http://lat.ms/10v5rfk ) that KIPP LA now operates 11 schools in the region with about 4,000 students. By 2020, the organization wants to grow to 9,000 students in 20 schools in and around Los Angeles.
The nonprofit is associated with a national umbrella organization called KIPP Schools, which oversees 162 campuses that enroll 58,000 students in 31 regions.
KIPP, which stands for Knowledge Is Power Program, operates only elementary and middle schools — but it has recently launched college counseling efforts.
The newspaper says independent charters account for about 16 percent of enrollment in the LA Unified School District.
