SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Mementos from the career of Olympic hero Rulon Gardner, including a USA Wrestling robe and a commemorative ring, will be auctioned off Saturday in Salt Lake City. The money collected at the auction will go to pay off debts Gardner owes as part of his bankruptcy case. Gardner has endured personal and financial hardships since shocking the world and defeating Russian Alexander Karelin at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — State leaders are eying four sites in northern Utah where a new state prison could be built. Members of the state Prison Relocation Commission would not reveal the locations at their meeting yesterday, but plan to name them in about a week. The four locations have been culled from a list of 26 spots in Box Elder, Salt Lake, Utah and Tooele Counties.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Salt Lake City officials say 25,000 pounds of fruit was donated to local food assistance programs this year through a program called FruitShare. The program allows people to register their fruit trees and then directs volunteers to help harvest apricots, plums and other fruit that would otherwise go to waste. The produce is split between homeowners, harvest volunteers, and efforts to help the needy.
SANDY, Utah (AP) — Alvaro Saborio and Kyle Beckerman scored to give Real Salt Lake a 2-0 victory over Chivas USA last night in its final game of the regular season. Salt Lake moved into third place in the Western Conference — two points ahead of FC Dallas, which hosts Portland on Saturday.
