DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — The Nahant Marsh Education Center in Davenport is expanding with more square footage for classrooms and other spaces.
The Quad-City Times reports (http://bit.ly/1tEGH0T ) the center is at a former contaminated marsh cleaned up more than a decade ago. From the late 1960s until the 1990s, Nahant Marsh was used for skeet and trap shooting by a sportsmen's club. It led to the contamination of the marsh with lead shot that was cleaned up in 1999 under the Environmental Protection Agency's Superfund program for $2 million.
The marsh is near the junction of Iowa Highway 22 and Interstate 280. It's home to more than 150 species of birds, as well as plants fish, reptiles, insects and mammals.
The education center's 1,600-square-foot expansion includes a large classroom, more bathrooms and storage space. Work is expected to finish in April.
