SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — The shootings that injured a Holy Cross College student and a juvenile are part of a pattern of violence against all college students on South Bend's north side, a city councilman said Sunday.
"Notre Dame (university) and the city have been in discussions about increased public safety. police protection of their students in this area," South Bend Common Council Member Fred Ferlic said.
"We have an obligation to protect our students, all students," Ferlic told the South Bend Tribune (http://bit.ly/1Cajt1g ).
If not, "it's just a matter of time . a kid's going to get killed here," he said.
The shooting occurred early Sunday at a home in a neighborhood where many students rent housing about a mile south of the Notre Dame campus. The Holy Cross campus and that of St. Mary's College also are nearby.
Ferlic, who's also an orthopedic surgeon, treated both shooting victims. He said the Holy Cross student suffered a gunshot that shattered a bone in one of his feet and a second bullet wound that entered his neck and traveled under the scalp but "did not reach the cranium."
"He was one-half inch away from being a vegetable," Ferlic said.
The juvenile "almost lost a leg" but is expected to recover fully, he said.
The juvenile's age was not available.
South Bend Police Capt. Scott Hanley said there were several parties in the neighborhood following Notre Dame's home football victory Saturday evening, but not at the home when the shooting occurred about 3 a.m.
"We've interviewed a bunch of people," Hanley said. "We're still trying to figure it out."
