PROVO, Utah (AP) — Health officials are warning people to stay away from bright green algae in Utah Lake after a dog died shortly after playing in the water.
Utah County Health Department officials issued the warning Tuesday, after getting a report about the dog's death.
Department chief Dr. Joseph Miner says the owner reported the dog was playing near the Lindon Marina and probably drank some water. The dog started acting strangely within 45 minutes and then threw up before dying.
State water quality official Carl Adams says people should not swim or boat in areas where the water is bright green.
He says algae sometimes produce natural toxins that can be harmful to humans and animals, but there's no easy way to tell when the toxins are being produced.
