EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State University will use a $5 million grant to help students who didn't receive enough pre-college math and science education to pursue a related degree.
The university announced the grant from the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation on Tuesday. The program is expected to accept about 300 new students interested in science and math-related careers each year.
Students will be able to enroll in two gateway courses designed to help them transition from high school to college learning. They will also be clustered in two of the university's five neighborhoods to strengthen their community and increase interaction with faculty.
Half of the $5 million grant will fund the program in its first three years and the rest will go into an endowment fund.
