SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Gov. Gary Herbert has directed all state agencies to begin recognizing same-sex marriages in Utah after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal of the state's gay marriage case. Herbert said at a news conference today that he's surprised and disappointed the Supreme Court passed on the case.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A report says Utah agencies geared toward people with disabilities need to fine-tune their programs that help students transition from high school to jobs or higher education. The nonprofit Disability Law Center notes that 19 percent of surveyed special education students who left school in 2011 did not have a job and were not enrolled in an educational program a year afterward.
MURRAY, Utah (AP) — Police say a 37-year-old man drowned after trying to retrieve his remote-controlled boat from a pond in Murray over the weekend. Police say the boat apparently became stuck at Willow Pond Saturday afternoon. The man was underwater for five to seven minutes before he was pulled out. He was transported to the hospital and pronounced dead.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah Jazz are signing a 5-year-old free agent guard to a one-day contract for a special scrimmage to night. JP Gibson, who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, plans to sign his contract with Jazz President Randy Rigby before joining the team in uniform for the annual preseason intrasquad scrimmage at EnergySolutions Arena.
