BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota elementary school is teaching its students how to prepare for entering the workforce.
Fourth- and fifth-grade students at Lincoln Elementary School are able to apply and interview for age-appropriate jobs at the school. Students have signed up for positions such as box top manager, lost and found manager, morning recess helper, morning library helper and new student tour guide, KXMB-TV (http://bit.ly/1x7tGuo ) reported.
Fifth-grader Rebecca Riepl said organization, respect and responsibility are important aspects of her job as a library helper.
"And you've got to be careful and kind to the other kids," she said.
The purpose is to give students the opportunity to feel more connected to their school.
"It makes me feel good that I'm helping out around the school," said fifth-grader Lexa Kieper.
Most of the participating students work morning shifts three times a week, but the school tries to be flexible with students and their schedules. Nearly 30 students currently hold jobs at the school, and many are still applying.
"The applications go as fast as we can put them out," said counselor Robin Lang. "I think the interest has been phenomenal. I think even we were surprised at the level of interest."
The student job project began in September, and the school plans to continue it in the coming years due to its success.
