(AP) — An already busy bear season has exploded in the Sierra Nevada with nine hungry bruins captured since Wednesday morning near Reno and Lake Tahoe as an ongoing drought continues to make food scarce in the mountains. A state wildlife spokesman says the activity is expected with cooler temperatures when a typical bear's food intake jumps from 3,000 to 25,000 calories a day.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Freeway lanes were closed for several hours near the Las Vegas Strip to allow bomb squad robots to examine a suspicious package in the median of busy Interstate 15. A Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper says all five southbound lanes were closed yesterday after the duffel-style bag was found. The bag contained harmless personal items and was removed a little after 4 yesterday afternoon.
