VCU wins $7.5m US grant for urban teaching program

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The Center for Teacher Leadership at Virginia Commonwealth University has been awarded a $7.5 million federal grant.

The U.S. Department of Education award is intended to refine and expand the center's Richmond Teacher Residency program. It will also evaluate the program's impact on teacher retention and student achievement.

The program deals with the unique challenges of preparing teachers for an urban classroom. The program includes a year of residency and three years of urban school teaching.

VCU's Center for Teacher Leadership is within the School of Education.
