SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration is warning two Utah-based companies that sell essential oils to stop promoting their products as cures for viral infections such as ebola.
The FDA said in letters sent this week to doTERRA and Young Living that their distributors are making misleading claims on websites about the oil's capabilities. Those include saying the product helps with cancer, autism and Alzheimer's Disease.
Peter Tidwell, spokesman for doTERRA in Pleasant Grove, said the company is working to ensure its distributors to clean up their websites. Tidwell said essential oils have profound health effects, but do not cure any disease.
Young Living says in a statement that the company is cooperating with the FDA and contacting distributors to ensure they're complying with policies about promoting the products.
