BEIRUT (AP) — Activists say U.S.-led airstrikes on Syrian oil installations held by the militant group Islamic State have killed nearly 20 people today, including five women and children living at one of the oil refineries who likely were the families of the militants.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says at least 14 militants were killed. Two activist collectives report higher death tolls.

The Islamic State group captured most of Syria's largest oil fields earlier this year and is believed to be partly funding its operations by smuggling oil out and selling it on the black market.

Activists say other strikes have hit checkpoints, compounds, training grounds and vehicles of the Islamic State throughout the territory they hold along the Euphrates River in northern and eastern Syria. And other airstrikes targeted the Nusra Front, a Syrian al-Qaida affiliate that has fought the Islamic State

Meanwhile, activists say the militants have freed at least 150 people from a prison in their de fact capital of Raqqa in northeastern Syria, fearing more strikes.
