SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Democrat trying to unseat six-term Republican U.S. Rep. Rob Bishop is calling on voters to end Bishop's tenure in the U.S. House because of his role in last year's government shutdown and inaction in Congress. During a debate yesterday in Ogden, business executive Donna McAlleer called Bishop a "guardian of gridlock." Bishop blamed the Senate for the gridlock and vowed to continue pushing back against overreaching federal regulations that take decisions out of the hands of Utah residents.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A federal judge in Utah has thrown out a lawsuit brought by snowboarders against one of the last ski resorts in the country to prohibit their sport. The ruling is a victory for Alta Ski Area east of Salt Lake City. Alta attorneys argued their snowboarding ban was within the ski area's rights.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A death row inmate convicted in the brutal killing of a woman 26 years ago has lost another appeal, this time by the Utah Supreme Court which ruled his arguments have no merit. Among Ralph Menzies' arguments was ineffective representation by past attorneys. Menzies kidnapped Maurine Hunsaker from her gas station job in Kearns and drove her to a picnic area where he tied her to a tree, strangled her and slit her throat.
WENATCHEE, Wash. (AP) — A body found by hunters in Washington state has been identified as 26-year-old Yannick Chancey Periou of St. George. The local sheriff's office said yesterday there is still no indication of the cause of death. The body was badly decomposed when it was found Aug. 31.
