NEW YORK (AP) — Venezuela's Nicolas Maduro is following in the footsteps of the late Hugo Chavez in his first presidential visit to New York.

Maduro will meet with labor and peace activists at a Venezuelan-sponsored event in the south Bronx Tuesday billed as an encounter with the "people's president."

Millions of dollars in charity and heating oil flowed to the working-class neighborhood after Chavez made a visit in 2005.

While the cash-strapped socialist government has little of Venezuela's oil wealth to spread around as it battles food shortages at home Maduro seems at ease delivering the sort of tongue-lashing his mentor was famous for.

In a nod to Chavez's 2006 United Nations' speech calling George W. Bush the "devil," Maduro at a climate summit Tuesday chastised "polluting powers" for causing "evil of planetary proportions."
