RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Lt. Gov. Dan Forest says the public can help boost North Carolina public school teacher compensation in the long run by requesting a specialty license plate authorized by the General Assembly this year.
Forest joined legislators and other state officials Thursday at three Piedmont locations in promoting the new "I Support Teachers" plate. Proceeds derived from an additional annual fee for the plate will go into a new North Carolina Education Endowment that will be used to improve teacher pay based directly on student achievement.
The plate can't be printed until 500 applications are received. Forest's office is collecting those initial applications.
The endowment also can be funded through state appropriations, designated income tax refunds and other donations.
Forest promoted the endowment idea as this year's legislative session began.
