CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico (AP) — Residents and tourists in Mexico's Cabo San Lucas are taking refuge in shelters and hotel conference rooms overnight, trying to ride out Hurricane Odile.
The storm made landfall shortly before 1 a.m. Eastern Time with an intensity of 125 mph. Ahead of the storm Mexican authorities evacuated coastal areas and readied shelters for up to 30,000 people.
American tourist Denise Mellor is waiting out the storm in a hotel near San Jose del Cabo, where the power went out not long after nightfall. She says, "we don't have a choice but to sit in here and hope for the best."
Some tourists had camped out at the Los Cabos international airport. They had hoped to get out before the storm, but the facility shut down all air operations late Sunday afternoon.
After reaching Category 4 strength on Sunday, Odile weakened some to a Category 3 but it's still a major storm.
The U.S. hurricane center is warning of possible coastal flooding and rainfall of 5 to 10 inches, with isolated amounts up to 15 inches.
