SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Descendants of both the victims and the perpetrators of the 1857 Mountain Meadows Massacre are unveiling a quilt memorializing the victims in St. George Wednesday.

The quilt is designed to honor the approximately 120 California-bound pioneers killed by Mormon militiamen in southern Utah. Most were from Arkansas.

Organizer Barbara Jones Brown says in a statement it depicts red cliffs of Utah gradually blending with the rolling hills or Arkansas to symbolize reconciliation.

It also includes 48 squares embroidered with messages from the descendants. The known names of the victims are also part of the design.

One quilt created by the group is already on display in northwestern Arkansas, and the second will go up at the Old County Courthouse in St. George the day before the anniversary of the massacre.
