BALTIMORE (AP) — He'd already been suspended for two games, but now NFL running back Ray Rice has been released by the Baltimore Ravens and suspended indefinitely by the league because of a domestic violence episode in February at an Atlantic City casino. A video released by TMZ Sports shows Rice and Janay Palmer -- who was then his fiancee, and is now his wife -- in an elevator. Each hits the other before Rice knocks Palmer off her feet and into a railing. A video released months ago showed him dragging Palmer from the elevator.
UNDATED (AP) — The NCAA has lifted the on-the-field sanctions placed on the Penn State football team for the Jerry Sandusky scandal, including immediately eliminating the postseason ban and restoring scholarships. Penn State was halfway through a four-year postseason ban handed down during the summer of 2012. The NCAA rescinded some of the scholarship sanctions last year. The school still must pay a $60 million fine. In addition, 112 wins under Joe Paterno remain forfeited, and the school will remain under monitoring.
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — As President Barack Obama considers how to expand operations against the Islamic State militants in Iraq, his defense chief says Obama needs to consider the consequences of what could be a lengthy campaign, as well as what could go wrong. Chuck Hagel, speaking to reporters in Turkey today, said there's been broad agreement in talks with lawmakers that the Islamic State militants must be destroyed. Obama meets tomorrow with congressional leaders, in advance of a Wednesday speech in which he's expected to outline his strategy.
MARIUPOL, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine's president has made a surprise trip to a government stronghold in the country's southeast -- in a dramatic show of his government's strength in the region. Speaking to hundreds of workers in hard hats in the strategic port city of Mariupol (mah-ROO'-pahl), President Petro Poroshenko declared that the city "was, is and will be Ukrainian." The visit came as a tenuous cease-fire appears to be holding between Ukrainian troops and Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine.
NEW CASTLE, Del. (AP) — Two Delaware boys -- ages 13 and 14 -- have been charged with assaulting a mentally disabled man. Authorities say the teens were arrested after they came forward to complain that they'd been harassed when a video of the attack was posted to social media. Police are seeking more suspects. They believe the 27-year-old victim was assaulted more than once.
