BANGKOK (AP) — Thai police are for the first time questioning a doctor at the heart of a surrogacy scandal involving a Japanese businessman who reportedly has fathered 16 surrogate babies.

Pisit Tantiwattanakul's whereabouts had been unknown since he closed his fertility clinic and emptied it of all patient files shortly after the scandal broke in early August.

However police summoned Pisit, and he presented himself to investigators late Monday at a police station in Bangkok.

Pisit was the owner of a fertility clinic allegedly involved in performing commercial surrogacy for Mitsutoki Shigeta, a 24-year-old Japanese man.

Police Col. Decha Promsuwan said authorities will likely press two charges against Pisit, including violation of the regulations of the Medical Council of Thailand, which ban commercial surrogacy.
