WASHINGTON (AP) — The National Institutes of Health is publishing research behind an experimental Ebola vaccine. Monkey studies show that one shot of the drug vaccine can trigger fast protection against the deadly virus. However, the effect waned unless the monkeys got a booster shot made a different way. Now, NIH is conducting the first human safety study of the vaccine in hopes it could be used to fight the current Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

SPARTAK, Ukraine (AP) — Amnesty International says all sides in the conflict in eastern Ukraine "have shown disregard for civilian lives and are blatantly violating their international obligations." The statement comes as clashes in the region today throw into doubt a two-day old cease-fire between the government in Kiev and Russian-backed separatists. The U.N. estimates the fighting has killed at least 2,600 civilians and forced hundreds of thousands out of their homes.

CAIRO (AP) — The head of the Arab League says it's time member states confront Islamic State extremists "militarily and politically." Backing from the 22-country Arab League could provide crucial support for President Barack Obama's effort to assemble an international coalition against the militants. Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby says the Islamic State group is "cancerous" and must be confronted.

HOUSTON (AP) — The first Sunday of the NFL season has been marked by a protest against the name of the Washington Redksins. A small group of Native Americans held signs voicing their distaste for the name outside the Texans' stadium in Houston, where Washington is opening the season. Juan Mancias of the Carrizo Tribe of Texas says the name is racist and should not be used. A few Washington fans, including one wearing a jersey with the team logo stopped to hear the protesters' views.

NEW YORK (AP) — Joan Rivers has received the kind of star-studded send-off she always said she wanted. Howard Stern delivered the eulogy at the comedian's funeral in New York today. Tony Award-winner Audra McDonald sang "Smile," the New York City Gay Men's Chorus sang "Hey Big Spender" and other Broadway hits, Hugh Jackman sang "Quiet Please, There's A Lady On Stage" at the end of the ceremony. Bagpipers from the New York City Police Department played "New York, New York" on the street as mourners filed out. Rivers died Thursday at 81.
