COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — More than 800 volunteers including dentists, hygienists and dental assistants are participating in a dental clinic at the University of Maryland.

The clinic is being held Saturday on the school's basketball court, which has been converted into a mobile dental clinic with 100 dental chairs. Volunteers are performing cleanings, fillings, extractions and root canals.

The clinic started Friday and is continuing Saturday, but organizers said around 8 a.m. Saturday that they were already at capacity for the number of patients they can serve for the day. Organizers say they expect to provide more than $1 million in free dental care to 1,000 patients.

The event is part of the two-day Mid-Maryland Mission of Mercy and Health Equity Festival.
